Transformational Leadership

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

This is defined as a leadership approach that causes change in individuals and social systems. In its ideal form, it creates valuable and positive change and enhances the motivation, morale and performance of followers through a variety of mechanisms.

MODEL

The model of transformational leadership starts at the level of individual transformation, before moving on to the group and institutional levels.  It fosters a culture of accountability, ownership, and autonomy.  When applied to gender and leadership, this process leads to the redefinition of gender and power relations, and the strengthening of leadership that is bold and innovative and builds on the skills of women and men in society.

PRINCIPLES

Transformational leadership is grounded in the principles and values of equality, equity, democracy, justice, non-violence and cooperation. CIWiL uses this framework to promote women’s understanding of the linkages between their leadership and action to address the fundamental challenges of the Caribbean, e.g., systemic gender discrimination, persistent poverty, violence and crime, environmental sustainability and regional integration.
